10. RUN DMC -
"Raising Hell"
One of Rubin's first efforts, his merging
of rock and rap with Run DMC's cover of "Walk This Way" set musical history
for years to come. Also, who can forget "My Adidas"?
This just narrowly edged out the first
Beastie Boys album, BTW (only because the Beasties' better work was on
subsequent albums that Rubin wasn't involved in). |
|
9. SLAYER -
"Seasons in the Abyss"
"Expendible Youth", "Dead Skin Mask", and
the chilling "Hollow Point" are all examples of classic Slayer. While
Metallica was winding down and working with poncey Canadian producers, Rubin
kept Slayer at their most aggressive and pure. |
|
8. JOHNNY CASH -
"American 4: The Man Comes Around"
There's something chilling about Johnny
Cash telling you he shot someone, whether it be in Reno, or as a hilltop
sniper. There's also something harrowing about a 70-year-old singing Nine
Inch Nails songs. Rubin's latest piece of work with Johnny Cash is no less
powerful than anything he ever recorded for Sun Records and no less pure. |
|
7. DANZIG - "Danzig"
Rick's first foray into working with former
Misfit Glenn Danzig would lead to a brilliant collaborative career, and pave
the way for even Johnny Cash to record Glenn's songs. "Mother" remains a
brilliant but creepy gem. |
|
6. SYSTEM OF A
DOWN
This LA-based band fuses hardocre punk a la
Dead Kennedys with Slayer-esqe speed and Eastern rhythms, even dabbling in
3/4 waltz time. Purely revolutionary, "System" are the first band that have
completely blown me away with their work since I first heard Metallica's
first album. Go figure, I wasn't surprised to find out that Rick Rubin was
behind it. |
|
5. RED HOT CHILI
PEPPERS - "Bloodsugarsexmagic"
The last great Red Hot Chili Peppers
album. Although this one was heavy on quantity and not exactly trimmed down
to the best few songs, it DID produce classic tunes like "Give It Away" and
"Suck My Kiss".

|
4. THE CULT -
"Electric"
The debate over this album may possibly
lead to my divorce, and it would surprise no one who knows me. The Mrs.
thinks "LOVE" is the best Cult album. Fat chance...it's "ELECTRIC" (the ALL
MUSIC GUIDE backs me up on this one, as do many people I know).
One can only imagine what "She Sells
Sanctuary" could have been like if Rubin was behind THAT. THEN,
perhaps, there would be a debate. |
|
3. SLAYER -
"Reign In Blood"
Short and sweet.
"Enter to the realm of Satan..."
Ride cymbals and devil rock abound. Words
cannot describe the sheer brilliance of this metal masterpiece, as Tom
Araya's opening scream on "Angel of Death", a lovely ballad about Adolf
Hitler, says it all. |
|
2. JOHNNY CASH -
"Unchained"
There's something incredible about Johnny
Cash singing "Rusty Cage". Lines like, "It's raining ice picks on your
steel shore" suddenly make sense.
No wonder Beck wrote him a tune...
"Dog food on the floor, and I've been like
this before..."
Never before has a senior citizen rocked so
hard! |

1. SYSTEM OF A
DOWN - "Toxicity"
This album has been driving my co-workers
crazy since I first heard it, inspiring one to ask, "Do you listen to music
like this in real life or just to bug us?". Like I said before, this band
blew me away like no one has since I first heard Metallica in grade 8. |
